Spring is just around the corner, which means warmer temperatures, lower heating bills, and a new season for exciting adventures. But before you start soaking up the sun, it's important to make sure your home and yard are ready for the big changes, especially if you're a homeowner. Taking care of your spring-cleaning list now means you'll have more time to enjoy the beautiful weather in the future.

Yard Cleanup
Every homeowner knows that after a long, harsh winter, it's usually your yard that needs the most work. That's why yard cleanup should be the top item on your to-do list. Start with your gutters — they've collected a lot of leaves and debris since the fall, and they may be wet and soggy due to thawed snow and ice. This can lead to water damage to your home over time. Other important yard cleanup tasks should include prepping your garden and landscaping beds for fresh plants, cleaning your outdoor furniture, clearing out walkways, and tending to items that fell apart to snow, ice, and water damage, like water hoses that may have cracked.

Check Your Exterior
Once you've cleaned the yard, take a look at the outside of your home. If you had a harsh winter with lots of snow or ice, look for water damage or places where you may need home repairs. Look at the roof for missing shingles, check the caulking around doors and windows, and clean the exterior windows.

HVAC System Check
You probably ran your heat all winter and plan to run your air conditioning all summer, so spring is the perfect time to check out your HVAC system. Replace filters. Clean vents. If you need any home repairs in this area, make an appointment to take care of them now. Keep in mind that the repairperson may charge more if you call them closer to summertime.

Indoor Spring Cleaning
There's a reason it's called "spring cleaning." It's the time of year when most people want to get their houses in order, and there's no time like the beginning of the season to clean the spots you don't always touch. Wash the windows, wipe down the baseboards, and dust your ceiling fans. If you used a fireplace over the winter, now is the time to clean it, too. You'll also want to take some time to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to see if they're working correctly.
